The Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee has recently heard two bills that would allow the legalization of sports betting in Missouri. If approved the new bills would allow Missouri residents and visitors to bet on sporting events but lawmakers are divided over the legalization of video lottery terminals. The proposed SB30 bill would legalize sports betting in Missouri while introducing a 10% tax on wagers with no provisions for lottery machines while the SB-1 bill replicates SB30 at 10% tax and addresses the video lottery terminals proposing a 36% tax. SB-1, proposed by Sen. Denny Hoskins is estimated by Hoskins to generate revenues of over $250 million in slot machines. The bill is supported by the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Current, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and the St. Louis City SC though the teams have expressed their reservations for video lottery terminals with St. Louis Cardinals President Bill DeWitt stating, “We support the sports betting piece. As for the VLT piece, to the the extent that it would make it harder for this bill to pass, we will not support it. Our position is that we’d like to see the two issues bifurcated.”
